National and International Teaching Activities

I have been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education since 1994, teaching in both Hungarian and English. Between 2003 and 2011, I served as the department’s Director of Education, for which I received the Dean’s Commendation in 2003.

I regularly organize and participate in international round-table discussions across several fields of otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery. I have repeatedly served as faculty member in international courses organized by the European Otorhinolaryngological Society, many of which were based on novel procedures developed by my research group (e.g., Lausanne, Amsterdam).

Based on my work, I was invited twice to the Congress of the American Laryngological Association and delivered lectures at phoniatric and laryngeal surgery courses organized by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Harvard University in Boston. I authored a chapter in a laryngeal surgery textbook edited by the American Society, to be published shortly.

I also contributed a chapter (“Bilateral Impaired Vocal Cord Immobility”) to the textbook Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial Stenosis edited by Sandhu and Nouraei (2015), published by the British Laryngological Society.

In otologic surgery, I am a regular invited instructor at the Caetani World Hearing Center courses in Warsaw. I participated as an organizer and instructor in the establishment of the Cochlear Implantation Center in Târgu Mureș and am currently engaged in similar activities in Chișinău.

Our department functions as a European otologic training center and regularly participates in the international teaching of novel ear surgery techniques. Several innovative surgical technologies were first introduced into human clinical practice at our department (e.g., Nucleus Profile cochlear implant, new BAHA devices).

Through my international fellowships and research collaborations, I have established extensive professional relationships with leading ENT departments worldwide (e.g., Stanford, Harvard, Chicago, University of Jena), facilitating international training opportunities for my colleagues.

PhD Education and Supervision

I serve as supervisor and lecturer in the Doctoral School “Clinical and Experimental Research in Reconstructive and Organ-Preserving Surgery”, within the subprogram “Research on Surgical Options for Function Preservation and Restoration in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.”

I supervise PhD research in the following areas:

  • Surgical treatment of congenital and acquired laryngotracheal stenosis and functional restoration

  • Rhinology and allergic rhinitis

  • Sleep medicine (sleep diagnostics, sleep apnea, surgical therapy)

  • Endoscopic maxillofacial and skull base surgery

To date, six PhD students have successfully obtained their degrees under my supervision, with four additional defenses expected in the near future.

I am frequently invited to serve as opponent or committee member in PhD defenses and habilitation procedures.

As a department leader, I place strong emphasis on maintaining continuity in scientific training. Nearly all colleagues at the department are involved as PhD supervisors or students. Two of my former PhD students already supervise or will soon supervise PhD candidates independently. Over recent years, an average of 2–3 PhD defenses per year has been achieved, a strong performance relative to the department’s staff size.

Research Grants (Professional Leadership as President of the Clinical Research Coordinating Center)

  • GINOP 2.3.2 – Development of ECRIN laboratory and equipment infrastructure
Consortium led by the University of Pécs; University of Szeged share: 198 million HUF

Clinical Activity

Since 1989, I have performed more than 12,000 surgical procedures, covering the full spectrum of otorhinolaryngology—from implantable hearing devices and minimally invasive head and neck surgery to complex oncologic reconstructions.

Together with my colleagues, I have developed several innovative and internationally recognized surgical concepts and techniques, published in leading international journals. I am co-inventor of two patents.

I provide national and international consultation services and am frequently invited to perform surgeries. I regularly collaborate with various departments of the University of Szeged and other Hungarian institutions in interdisciplinary procedures. I continuously participate in international training programs to master the latest surgical techniques.
